Johnny Appleseed
200 years ago, a man lived in the United States of America. His name was John Chapman, but everyone called him Johnny Appleseed.
He spent his life in the wilderness. Everywhere he went he planted apple seeds: in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio. His dream was a country where no one had to starve and everyone could eat apples. He was a very friendly man, he slept outdoors and walked barefoot through the country.
Everybody liked Johnny Appleseed. He wore clothes made of sackcloth and carried a tin pot. He used this pot for cooking. The Bible also accompanied him, it was his favourite book.
After more than 50 years of travelling, Johnny Appleseed died in 1845, but some of the trees he planted still bear rich fruit today.
